Agartala, September 18 : Political tension has reportedly surfaced in Pecharthal’s Shantipur area ahead of the ADC Village Committee elections following an alleged attack on three youths on Wednesday night.
The three youths, identified as Ratimohan Chakma (27), Ujjal Chakma (22) and Gulshukka Chakma (29), have lodged a written complaint with Pecharthal police, alleging that they were assaulted by a group while they had stopped to refuel their motorcycle.
According to the complainants, the incident took place in the Shantipur area while they were travelling from Pecharthal towards Kanchanpur. Police subsequently took the three youths to the police station. They were released at around 4 a.m., local sources said.
The incident has also triggered allegations of political retaliation. Ranjan Chakma, the father of one of the youths, claimed that he had been associated with the BJP since 2016-17. He alleged that several BJP leaders had assured his family of government benefits and employment opportunities after the party came to power in Tripura in 2018.
Chakma claimed that the assurances were not fulfilled. Subsequently, he and around 40 other families reportedly left the BJP and joined the Tipra Motha party shortly before last year’s elections.
The alleged attack is being viewed by the complainants in the context of the political shift. The three youths have named those allegedly involved in the incident in their written complaint and sought police action.
Ranjan Chakma also expressed dissatisfaction over the response from local political leaders following the incident.
With the ADC Village Committee elections approaching, the incident has added to political tension in the Pecharthal area. Police have received the complaint, though details regarding any further action or arrests were not immediately available.
