Agartala, September 17: The Centre has clarified that the 2027 Census will not publish separate statistics for the ‘Tripura’ tribal community where it falls under a single notified Scheduled Tribe entry. However, respondents will be free to identify their mother tongue, and the language they report will be recorded in the Census.
In a response to a representation seeking separate enumeration and publication of data for the Tripura tribe and Tripura language, the Centre said Scheduled Tribe data are recorded strictly according to the officially notified list. Separate figures are not provided for sub-entries covered under a single main entry.
In a letter addressed to the Director of Census Operations, Tripura, the Assistant Registrar General (Social Studies), Anu Bhawana, referred to the representation dated June 18, 2026, and reiterated that Scheduled Tribe enumeration would follow the notified list.
The letter pointed out that serial number 18 of Tripura’s notified Scheduled Tribe list includes “Tripura, Tripuri, Tippera” under a single entry. As a result, separate Census statistics for the communities covered by these sub-entries will not be published.
However, a separate provision applies to mother tongue data. During the Census, the language identified by a respondent as their mother tongue will be recorded as stated by the respondent.
The clarification came after the Tripura Census authorities sought separate enumeration and publication of statistics for the Tripura tribe and Tripura language.
