Sonamura, September 15 : A joint team of the Border Security Force (BSF) and Jatrapur Police seized 63 kg of dried ganja during an operation in the Birampur border area of Tripura’s Sepahijala district on Tuesday, police said.
Acting on a tip-off about suspected drug trafficking, a team led by Jatrapur Police Sub-Inspector Bijoy Chakraborty, along with police personnel, TSR jawans and BSF personnel, launched a search operation in the area.
During the operation, the security personnel spotted three sacks lying in a jungle near the border fencing. A search of the sacks led to the recovery of 63 kg of dried ganja, officials said.
The suspected smugglers, who were reportedly present in the Uchchutila area, fled after noticing the security personnel. No arrests have been made in connection with the seizure so far.
The seized contraband was brought to Jatrapur Police Station for further legal proceedings.
Jatrapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Parthanath Bhowmik said an investigation was underway to identify the owner of the seized ganja and trace others allegedly involved in the smuggling operation.
He said the police would continue to conduct joint operations with the BSF to curb drug trafficking along the border.
The latest seizure comes amid continued concerns over drug smuggling through border areas of Sonamura subdivision. Security agencies have stepped up surveillance in the region following reports of repeated attempts by smugglers to transport narcotics through the border.
