Agartala, September 16: Opposition Leader Jitendra Chaudhury has alleged that attempts are being made to curb the media whenever it raises questions about the government or highlights public-interest issues.
Reacting to recent instances involving the suspension of broadcasts or disconnection of cable services linked to some YouTube channels, Facebook pages and cable channels in Tripura, Chaudhury raised several allegations against the state government.
He said questioning the government and criticising its actions are democratic rights of citizens. He added that the media also has the right to highlight public grievances and scrutinise government policies and actions.
Referring to the media as the fourth pillar of democracy, Chaudhury said protecting press freedom is essential.
He alleged that action is being taken against media outlets when they raise issues such as poor road conditions, power supply problems, the reported non-availability of rice, pulses and sugar through the public distribution system, and delays in recruitment despite repeated job notifications.
He also referred to alleged instances involving cable channels whose broadcasts were reportedly stopped or connections disconnected. While differences between the government and media organisations are possible, he said using such differences as a basis for stopping broadcasts or disconnecting cable services would raise concerns over freedom of expression.
Chaudhury further alleged that newspapers are facing pressure in different forms under the present government. He also alleged that some media organisations have been denied government advertisements.
According to Chaudhury, the role of the media is neither to praise the government nor the Opposition, but to report facts and raise issues concerning public interest.
He also criticised the state government over alleged corruption. Referring to Chief Minister Manik Saha’s stated policy of “zero tolerance” towards corruption, Chaudhury alleged that corruption has continued in various departments, including PWD, health and police.
He claimed the alleged irregularities involve personnel at different levels and said such practices are affecting the functioning of the state.
