Agartala, September 12 : In a critical mid-journey emergency, a health worker successfully delivered a baby inside an ambulance while a woman was being shifted from Kumarghat to Unakoti District Hospital in Kailashahar.
The woman was undergoing treatment at Kumarghat Sub-Divisional Hospital when doctors found the foetus in a breech position. With severe labour pain setting in, she was referred to the district hospital for urgent care.
Around 7.10 pm, ambulance driver Bikash Malakar and health worker Prosenjit Shukla Baidya set off for Kailashahar. But near a school in the Shantipur area, the woman’s condition suddenly worsened and she went into active labour.
With the hospital still some distance away, Baidya quickly assessed the situation and decided that waiting could put both lives at risk. He opted to conduct the delivery inside the ambulance.
Despite the complications associated with a breech presentation, the delivery was completed safely, and the baby was born inside the ambulance.
The ambulance then rushed to Unakoti District Hospital, where the mother and newborn were admitted for observation and necessary treatment.
Hospital sources said the health worker’s prompt decision and timely intervention helped avert further complications and ensured that both the mother and newborn reached the hospital safely.
