Agartala, September 18: Three Bangladeshi women allegedly staying in India without valid documents were detained near the airport area here along with an Indian national suspected of acting as a tout, Airport Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shyamal Debnath said.

During preliminary questioning, the three women reportedly admitted to being Bangladeshi nationals. Police identified the man as Sirajul Islam, a resident of Kaityaphala under Jatrapur Police Station, who allegedly accompanied the women towards Guwahati.
Preliminary investigation indicated that the women are residents of Bangladesh’s Khulna district and had allegedly entered India through the Sonamura border. Police said they were not carrying any valid documents authorising their entry or stay in India, and no Indian identity documents or passports were recovered from them..
The women reportedly told police that they had come to India in search of employment. Their exact purpose and intended destination beyond Guwahati are yet to be established, the OC said.Send Money Overseas
Police have registered a case and are producing the four detainees before the Magistrate’s Court. The investigating team is seeking five days’ remand of Sirajul Islam for further interrogation.
Asked whether the case could be linked to a women-trafficking network, Debnath said the possibility could not be determined at this stage. He added that further interrogation and investigation would establish whether other persons were involved in facilitating the women’s movement.
Police said the investigation is continuing.
