Sonamura, September 23: Residents of Bejimara’s Wards 3 and 4 blocked the Sonamura-Kathalia road for nearly an hour on Wednesday, protesting against a power transformer that they said had remained faulty for nearly a year.
The blockade began around 10 am, disrupting traffic and leaving commuters, schoolchildren and patients’ attendants stranded on the road.
Residents alleged that they had repeatedly approached the concerned authorities seeking repair or replacement of the transformer, but no permanent solution had been found. Attempts to restore power through temporary repairs had also failed to resolve the problem, they said.
The protesters demanded immediate restoration of a reliable power supply and warned of further agitation if the issue was not addressed.
Sonamura Nagar Panchayat Vice-Chairman Shahjan Mia reached the spot and assured the protesters that the faulty transformer would be repaired within a day.
The residents subsequently withdrew the blockade. They said they would resume their protest if the promised repair was not carried out within the stipulated time.
