Agartala, September 11: A controversy has erupted in Sonamura Nagar Panchayat over allegations that a guard wall is being constructed with public funds along the boundary of the residence of a sitting councillor.
The allegation involves Suniti Namo Mallik, councillor of Ward No. 1 of Sonamura Nagar Panchayat. Local residents claim construction work is underway at Thakurmura near the boundary of her residence using Nagar Panchayat funds.
Residents have alleged that the wall is being built to protect a room located within the premises of the councillor’s house, raising questions over the use of public money. They have also questioned the justification for undertaking the work in the name of public interest.
Locals said several areas in the locality face long-standing problems related to drainage, roads and guard walls, particularly during the monsoon. They questioned why those problems have not been addressed before work was taken up near the councillor’s residence.
Residents also alleged that rainwater flowing along the road has entered one resident’s property, damaging a septic tank. Another resident’s house wall has reportedly developed serious cracks.
People living behind the road near the councillor’s residence said waterlogging during the monsoon often makes the road difficult to use. They claimed the need for a guard wall in the area has been raised for a long time, but no solution has followed.
The ongoing construction near the councillor’s residence has further fuelled concerns among some residents. They fear the government-funded structure could later serve as part of the boundary protection of the private property, reducing the cost of construction for the homeowner.
Residents have demanded transparency over the project, including details of the scheme under which the work is being carried out, its sanctioned cost and its stated public purpose.
The allegations have not been independently verified. The concerned councillor and Sonamura Nagar Panchayat authorities have yet to issue a statement on the matter.
