Agartala, August 31: The death of former Tripura Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar triggered fresh uproar in the Tripura Assembly on Monday, the final day of the ongoing session, after opposition legislators raised allegations over the reported disappearance of a purported suicide note.
The issue was raised by Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman shortly before the Question Hour began. He claimed that Dhankar’s wife, who arrived in Tripura on Sunday, had sought to see the alleged suicide note and had stated that she possessed a photograph of the document.
Roy Barman alleged that the original note was subsequently removed and concealed. His remarks were interrupted by Assembly Speaker Rampada Jamatia, who said the matter could not be raised in the Assembly in that manner. The Speaker also pointed out that Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha had already made statements in the House twice regarding the death.
The Speaker appealed to Roy Barman not to create confusion and asked him to return to his seat, urging members to follow the rules and proceed with the scheduled business.
Following the Speaker’s intervention, tension escalated inside the House. Congress and CPI(M) legislators carrying placards entered the Well of the Assembly and began protesting. They raised slogans demanding an investigation and clarity over the whereabouts of the alleged suicide note.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath intervened to bring the situation under control. He requested the Speaker to allow the Question Hour to continue and proposed that the opposition be given an opportunity to raise the issue separately after the scheduled business was completed.
The protesting legislators subsequently withdrew from the Well and returned to their seats, allowing normal proceedings to resume.
The controversy has intensified the political debate surrounding the alleged suicide note and the manner in which the document was handled during the investigation into Anurag Dhankar’s death. Opposition parties have already raised several questions over the circumstances surrounding his death and the progress of the investigation.
