Agartala, September 11: A woman was allegedly robbed of her gold chain in broad daylight by two motorcycle-borne men near Ram Thakur Temple in the Jogendranagar area of Agartala on Friday, triggering fresh concern over street crime in the city.
The incident occurred around 11 am when the woman, identified as Geeta Rani Das, was walking along the road. According to her complaint, two men on a motorcycle approached her and engaged her in conversation. One of them then allegedly grabbed her gold chain and tried to pull it away.
When Das resisted, the men allegedly pushed her to the ground and fled with the chain on their motorcycle. She suffered injuries to her knee, elbow and leg in the fall.
Das said the stolen chain was worth around Rs 1.70 lakh at current market prices. Another woman accompanying her witnessed the incident.
The incident has also raised concerns among local residents over police patrolling and security in the area. Das alleged that similar incidents involving motorcycles had occurred in the locality during rallies and other programmes in the past.
Police reached the spot after receiving information and started an investigation. The identities and whereabouts of the two suspects were not known till the latest reports.
The broad-daylight incident has caused concern among residents, who have urged police to identify and arrest the suspects and strengthen security measures in the area.
