New Delhi, Sep 22 (IANS): A CBI Court in Jaipur has convicted and sentenced three public servants to seven years of Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) in a bank fraud case involving the unauthorised release of mortgaged securities and a loss of over Rs 12 lakh to the bank, officials said on Tuesday.

The court, on September 18, convicted Ramji Lal Meena, then Branch Manager; Murari Lal Meena, then Special Assistant; and Than Singh Lashkar, then Peon-cum-Housekeeper of Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC), Sheosinghpura, Lalsot, Dausa.

The court sentenced all three accused to seven years of RI and imposed a fine of Rs 85,000 on each.

The CBI had registered the case on February 1, 2019, based on a complaint lodged by the then Deputy General Manager of Oriental Bank of Commerce.

According to the complaint, Murari Lal Meena, while serving as Special Assistant at the bank’s Sheosinghpura branch abused his official position by dishonestly issuing unauthorised ‘No Dues Certificates’. These certificates facilitated the release of mortgaged securities despite outstanding loan liabilities.

The alleged acts resulted in a wrongful loss of Rs 12,14,660.71 to the bank across three loan accounts.

Following the investigation, the CBI filed a chargesheet on May 5, 2022, against Murari Lal Meena, Ramji Lal Meena and Than Singh Lashkar.

After conducting the trial, the court convicted the three accused and sentenced them accordingly.

In a separate case, the CBI had registered a case against retired Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) Deputy Chief Engineer Sajal Kanti Das for possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income, officials said on Monday.

The CBI’s Guwahati branch had said that Das and his wife, Sangita Das, accumulated disproportionate assets worth approximately Rs 88.20 lakh between 2016 and 2022.

According to the agency, the couple’s total assets, valued at around Rs 39.85 lakh in 2016, increased to Rs 1,28,66,946 by 2022. The alleged increase forms the basis of the disproportionate assets case.

The investigation had identified several properties and financial holdings allegedly linked to the couple in Assam’s Cachar district.

Among the properties under scrutiny is a house valued at approximately Rs 19 lakh, reportedly constructed on five kathas of land in the Rangpur locality of Cachar district.
