Shantirbazar, September 10: Alleging prolonged physical and mental harassment over dowry, threats and domestic abuse, a homemaker has approached Shantirbazar Police Station seeking justice against her husband and in-laws.
The woman lodged a written complaint at the police station on Thursday and later spoke to the media, detailing the alleged harassment she has faced since her marriage.
According to her complaint, she married Raju Das, a resident of Choudhuripara in the Old Hospital Road area of Shantirbazar subdivision, around seven years ago. She alleged that barely one-and-a-half months after the marriage, her husband and members of her in-laws’ family began subjecting her to harassment over dowry demands.
She claimed that her family subsequently provided a refrigerator, gold ornaments and other articles in an attempt to meet the demands. However, she alleged that the harassment did not stop even after the items were provided.
The woman further alleged that her husband was involved in a relationship with another woman. Unable to bear the alleged physical and mental torture, she eventually left her matrimonial home, carrying gold ornaments given by her parental family as well as some essential documents belonging to herself and her son.
After she left the house, she alleged, members of her husband’s family accused her of stealing household articles and gold ornaments. She termed the allegations baseless and maintained that the jewellery she took with her belonged to her and had been given by her parental family at the time of her marriage.
She also alleged that her husband has been repeatedly threatening her over the phone. Citing continued harassment, threats and what she described as false allegations, she sought police intervention and protection.
Speaking to reporters at the police station on Thursday, the woman appealed to the administration to ensure justice and take appropriate action against those responsible.
Police are expected to verify the allegations and examine the circumstances surrounding the complaint before taking further action.
