Chennai, Sep 12 (IANS): The Tamil Nadu government on Saturday announced that the final rites of renowned Tamil scholar and professor Solomon Pappaiah would be conducted with state honours. Pappaiah died at a private hospital in Madurai on Friday following age-related ailments. He was 90.

The decision was taken in recognition of Pappaiah’s huge contribution to the Tamil language, literature and public discourse. The state government has traditionally accorded state honours during the funerals of eminent Tamil scholars, writers and personalities from the film industry.

Pappaiah’s body was kept at his residence in Gnanolipuram, Madurai, to allow members of the public, political leaders, writers, academics and his admirers to pay their last respects.

His family said the cremation would take place at the Thathaneri electric crematorium in Madurai on Saturday afternoon.

One of Tamil Nadu’s most recognisable public intellectuals, Pappaiah brought classical Tamil literature and contemporary social issues closer to ordinary people through his distinctive style of moderating Pattimandrams, or Tamil debate programmes.

He moderated more than 12,000 Pattimandrams in India and abroad during a career spanning several decades. His wit, simplicity, humour and ability to explain complex literary and social subjects in an accessible manner earned him a devoted following across generations.

From the early 1990s, television helped Pappaiah take Tamil literature and cultural discussions into households across the State. Through his programmes, he introduced audiences to the richness of the Tirukkural and other classical works while also encouraging debates on family relationships, changing social values and everyday life.

Observers often credited him with using television to promote Tamil identity and culture in much the same way that leaders of the Dravidian movement had earlier used cinema to reach a mass audience.

Apart from his immense popularity as a television personality and debate moderator, Pappaiah was respected in academic circles for his scholarship. Professors and Tamil researchers recalled his contribution to literary studies, including his recent work on Sangam literature.

Pappaiah received several awards during his lifetime. The Union government honoured him with the Padma Shri in 2021, while the Tamil Nadu government conferred the Kalaimamani award on him in 2000.

His death marks the end of an era in Tamil public discourse, leaving behind a legacy that united scholarship with popular communication.
