Agartala, September 10: A theft at a Kali temple located inside a residential compound in Adarsh Palli under Amtali police station has triggered concern in the area. A man was allegedly caught attempting to steal jewellery and other valuables from the temple and assaulted a family member before fleeing, police said.
According to Amtali police station Officer-in-Charge Rana Chatterjee, resident Jiban Dutta lodged a complaint alleging that a group of thieves entered his house the previous night. The family noticed the theft when the accused were allegedly leaving with jewellery and other valuables from the Kali temple on the premises.
After spotting one of the alleged thieves, Jiban Dutta’s father, Parimal Dutta, chased him. The accused allegedly attacked Parimal Dutta during the chase and fled. Parimal sustained injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at AGMC Hospital. He is also a government employee, according to the family.
Following the complaint, Amtali police launched an investigation. Acting on information gathered with the assistance of local residents and through intelligence inputs, police arrested a suspect in connection with the alleged theft.
Police said the arrested man is suspected of entering the house and committing the theft. Police also said he has been linked to multiple theft cases registered at different police stations, including in Udaipur.
The accused is scheduled to be produced before a court on Thursday. Police are seeking custody for questioning to recover the stolen jewellery and other items and to determine whether others were involved in the incident, OC Rana Chatterjee said.
Police are also investigating whether the arrested man has links with recent thefts reported in Amtali and adjoining areas.
